Kaupapa Whanau

Tamaki Makaurau Art, Design

Caroline is of Irish and English descent, born and raised in rural Taranaki. She is founder and director of Cabal [k’bal], a pioneering arts / design and facilitation practice based in Tamaki Makaurau.

Cabal’s current focus is within land-based design processes, bringing an wholistic, deep kinship approach that draws together art, culture and healing, research and storytelling, integration facilitation, design and construction.

Caroline sees design process as a pragmatic domain within which to practice radical unity and express deep beauty. Each project is approached as an opportunity to explore and develop the human journey, finding simple practical tools and processes that activate an intentional, continual, reciprocal process of connection, rebirth and regeneration - whole people and whole place.

Since 1996, Cabal’s projects have included temporary and permanent public art, involvement in urban design master planning, civic bridge design and lead artist services for large scale infrastructure projects. Cabal has been awarded numerous high profile public commissions, contributing trans-cultural methodologies to some of the largest and most complex urban development and infrastructure projects in New Zealand.

Caroline’s unique combination of group facilitation, participatory research and sense of place storytelling, brings the essence of stories from the land and diverse local peoples, into the heart of development and construction processes.

Caroline is also sought after for her wholistic strategic and innovation processes. As a foundation creative team member for pioneering initiative, ‘The Big Idea’, she helped shape the online home of New Zealand’s creative sector, now serving over 20,000 creative professional members. Her deep whole systems thinking has also been instrumental in the ‘Creative Ecology Living Research’, a new model for resilience in creative communities, with Creative Coalition (NZ).

Caroline is one of the core leadership of the Living Future New Zealand Collaborative (www.living-future.org), helping to navigate new pathways for advancing regenerative practices of Aotearoa.

Caroline is author of two books: “Panmure Sense of Place Scrapbook’ for Auckland Council and ‘The Artist’s Workbook’ supporting professional development for visual artists, commissioned by New Zealand’s Artist Alliance.
